Department of Energy Standards with Phase Out Dates

Are You Ready?

Starting in 2012, many commonly used lamps will no longer be manufactured or imported due to non-compliance with the strict new General Service Incandescent Lamp Standards.

As shown below, the initial phase out will be 100W incandescents on January 1, 2012 with the remaining common wattages following over the next two years.

General Service Incandescent Lamp Standards with Effective Dates
Current Wattage Rated Lumen Ranges New Maximum Rated Wattage Minimum Rate Lifetime Effective Date
100 1490-2600 72 1,000 hours 1/1/2012
75 1050-1489 53 1,000 hours 1/1/2013
60 750-1049 43 1,000 hours 1/1/2014
40 310-749 29 1,000 hours 1/1/2014

In addition to incandescent lamps, there are new standards which eliminate many halogen reflector lamps and fluorescent lamps as shown on the following charts. The new standards for both take effect on July 14, 2012.

Energy Conservation Standards for Incandescent Reflector Lamps
Lamp Lamp Type Diameter Lumens Per Watt
40-205W Standard Spectrum Less than 2.5 inches (PAR30, PAR38, BR30 & ER30, BR40 & ER40) 130V: 18.4 to 31.9 LPW 120V: 16.0 to 27.6 LPW
40-205W Modified Spectrum 2.5 inches and greater (R20 & PAR20) 130V: 15.4 to 26.7 LPW 120V: 13.5 to 23.4 LPW
General Service Fluorescent Lamp Standards
Fluorescent Lamps Wattage Color Temperature Lumen per Watt (LPW) Requirement Impact
4 ft. T12 and T8 Linear (Medium Bi-pin) 25W and above Up to 4500K and 4500K-7000K 89 LPW and 88LPW Most Standard 4 ft T12 lamps are eliminated. F32 minimum 2850 lumens: Standard SP lamps at 2800 lumens don't meet standard. Current High Lumen 32W, 30W, 28W and 25W models meet standard.
8 ft. T12 and T8 Slimline Linear 52W and above Up to 4500K and 4500K-7000K 97 LPW and 93 LPW Generally, 8 ft. T* lamps meet standard. Most T12 lamps are eliminated except 60W 800/SPX T12.
8ft. T12 and T8 HO Linear (cold temp. lamps exempt) All Up to 4500K and 4500K-7000K 92 LPW and 88 LPW Many 8 ft. T12 HO lamps are eliminated (both 110W nominal and 95W nominal). 8 ft. T8 HO lamps meet standard. Cold temperature lamps are exempt.
2 ft. U-shaped T12 and T8 (includes 6", 3" and 1-5/8" spacing) 25W and above Up to 4500K and 4500K-7000K 84 LPW and 81 LPW All T12 2 ft. U-bent lamps are eliminated. Some T8 U-bent standard 700/SP lamps are eliminated. Some T8 800/SPX U-bent lamps will meet the standard.
4ft. T5 High Efficiency 26W and above Up to 4500K and 4500K-7000K 86 LPW and 81 LPW All T5 HE lamps meet the standard (this regulation prevents the manufacture of lower-performing T5 halo phosphor lamps.)
4 ft. T5 High Output 49W and above Up to 4500K and 4500K-7000K 76 LPW and 72 LPW All T5 HO lamps meet the standard (this regulation prevents the manufacture of lower-performing T5 halo phosphor lamps.)
